Smart security solutions can control your security system, your locks, your lights, even your thermostat remotely via an app on your phone.
The model of a security system with a 3 year (and in some cases even more) monitoring contract is becoming obsolete. Annual contracts, or even month to month contracts, are replacing long term commitments. Monthly fees are dropping dramatically. Depending on the level of security you need, direct notification is replacing call centers. Economical on site camera video feeds are being viewed to access the ‘problem’ and intelligent decisions are being made on the next step.
There are many security systems on the market and choosing one is not simple. Our recommendation is to consult with us to understand the offerings. What functionality do you want and what is your budget?
In addition to a security system, you can add a smart lock. This allows you to lock or unlock the door and verify the door is secure anywhere you have cell service. Want to know the kids got home from school safely, have your lock text you whenever it’s unlocked.
Yale Real Living Smart Lock
Buffalo Security is stocking – and endorsing – the Yale Real Living Smart Lock. CNET states “Your smart lock options are quickly expanding, but you’ll still want to take a look at the Yale Real Living Touchscreen Z-Wave Deadbolt. With plenty of customizable features and a modern-looking, “cellphone chic” design, Yale’s two-year-old lock fits right in with the current crop of smart offerings.”
A smart lock is optional. Two of the most attractive benefits of a smart lock include the ability to remotely control the lock on the door and the elimination of keys. It’s important to remember the security is in the deadbolt, not the handle. So choose a keypad/touchscreen deadbolt and replace your handle with one that does not lock (to prevent you from locking yourself out). This type of handle is called a privacy function handle (either knob or lever).
If your primary goal with a smart lock is key elimination, that can be accomplished with any keypad lock (the lock doesn’t need to be smart). As with smart locks, there are numerous keypad (or touchscreen depending on your preference) deadbolts on the market so how do you decide? Again, start with internet searches and visit Buffalo Security and consult with the professionals. We carry Kwikset, Schlage, Emtek, and Arrow residential keypad/touchscreen deadbolts in stock and have access to almost any brand on the market.
Our hands down favorites: The Arrow Revolution and The Yale Real Living. There are a number of reasons but the first is ease of programming and the second is ease of changing access codes. Also, both locks are Grade 2 locks as opposed to Grade 3. This means a better lock for similar money. Whatever you decide, the freedom of a “keyless future” is worth checking out.
